Never used avira. Although, Avast is pretty good and I currently have it on my computer that's getting fixed at the moment.

I was hit with the "System Restore" malware virus this past weekend, and have spent three days finally getting my system back up and running. I tried it with Microsoft's Security Essentials, Avira and Avast. I found out about all three on the site, "The Best Freeware Reviewed and Rated," in the article, "Best Free Antivirus Software," http://www.techsupportalert.com/best...s-software.htm.

The results on this virus? Microsoft Security Essentials noticed the virus and handled about one out of every two issues I encountered. Then I tried to install Avast, as that was the previous top pick at the techsupportalert.com web site. It wouldn't even install! Not under safe mode, off of a clean flash drive, nothing. I tried four different times. Then I installed Avira and wow - it worked perfectly! I did the quick scan, then full scan (when I went to bed), and set it to scan on the reboot. Since then, no problems whatsoever!

So, I'd go with avira. Excellent product, seems to work very well, and the price is right!

I think Avira works better than avast. but I'm not sure as of now because its about 6 years since the last time I have used Avira. This is a strict anti-virus as far as Ii can remember.
However, there are lots of better antiviruses these days though some of them aren't free. The best so far I can recommend to you is the ClamWin Free Antivirus. In my oppinion, ClamWin is the best free this time as I have never got a virus since I installed it.
